[IC Information]
Character Name: Dilandu Albatou
Series: Vision of Escaflowne
Gender: male
Age: 15
Species: Gaean (essentially, human - however, he's been the subject of a number of experiments that may have changed him in some small physical ways as well as damaging him psychologically.)
Sexuality: Dilandu's preference is never touched on in the canon material. I believe him to be either homosexual or bisexual, due to his highly physical nature, his disdain for women, and his all-male environment. Being a teenage boy, he's likely to experiment.
Appearance: Dilandu is a slender, athletic young man with fine features, a pale complexion, silver-grey hair, and striking magenta eyes. (He is not an albino, however.) He is five feet, seven inches tall and weighs approximately one-hundred-thirty-four and a half pounds, all of it lean muscle. His hair is cut short in the back and combed towards the nape of his neck, while his long, parted bangs - which would hang almost to his jaw if wet - are left loose, and curl upwards at the ends. A long, thin scar runs diagonally across his right cheek from temple to just about even with his upper lip.
Dilandu cultivates his appearance. He is vain, and considers his scar to be a mark of shame; any mention of it is likely to infuriate him. He carries himself with a warrior's ease, and his body language and general demeanor are usually confident and cocky. He often sets his hands on his hips or crosses his arms even in the presence of his ranked superiors. Dilandu has a very expressive face, with delicate eyebrows, long, dark eyelashes, and an intense gaze. He doesn't do well at hiding his emotions, and would probably make a terrible poker player.
Because Dilandu is part of his homeland's military, he is usually seen in full uniform. This consists of a black leather jacket, gaurd skirt, and pants, knee-high red boots made of leather and metal, a brown, gold-accented belt to which his sword is fastened (or would be, if it had come with him to Manhattan), and large, rounded shoulder gaurds made of metal and painted red. The shoulder gaurds each have one short spike to indicate his captain's rank. His jacket and gaurd skirt are both trimmed in red with gold details; the jacket is more intricate and has a high collar decorated with gold. The skirt and shoulder gaurds are held in place by means of straps which attach to the jacket. Dilandu also wears a golden diadem with a reddish-purple stone in the center, both for vanity's sake and to keep his bangs out of his eyes. Underneath his uniform, he also wears a sleeveless lavendar undershirt, and this and a pair of black pants serve as his casual wear.
Personality: If any one word could describe Dilandu, that word would be "intense." He absolutely does not do things by halves - he demands instant gratification, hates to wait, and either commits himself fully to something or blows it off. He tends to excel when he wants to, but can't be bothered with mundane things.
In a sense, Dilandu has a very childlike mentality. His emotions control him - he is impulsive, quick to change moods, and easily becomes defensive or aggressive when questioned. He tends to see things only from his viewpoint, resorting to force or loud complaints when he doesn't immediately get his way. He loves to be adored, but false flattery rouses his anger easily. When stressed, he finds solace in alcohol (generally vino), or takes out his aggression on the nearest available person or piece of furniture.
Many of Dilandu's emotional problems stem from a childhood in which his "caregivers" subjected him to painful and frightening experiments; he was usually restrained for these, and left in a dungeon cell alone the rest of the time. When he failed to meet a certain goal, he was subjected to further procedures, and he quickly realized that being "perfect" at everything was the only way to avoid the experiments. This mentality made Dilandu not only a perfectionist when it comes to his appearance and physical skills, but also very stubborn about being in control - he'll never admit to being wrong or in any way vulnerable, if he can help it. He also has a deep fear of being alone, not physically, but cut off from others in the greater sense. This manifests itself as a desire to control everything and everyone around him, to insure that he knows what is going on and where everyone is at all times. Similarly, a sense of helplessness when he was young has led Dilandu to feel he must prove himself as capable, and in his eyes, being strong means being able to bully and intimidate others into submission. He doesn't tolerate anything that he considers indicative of weakness. He does, however, retain a desire to be loved, just like any other person.
It should also be noted that Dilandu is both sexist and racist (towards some of the non-human denizens of his homeworld) - ironically, considering his origins, he has a low opinion of women, believing them to be inherently frail, sentimental, and basically useless.
Abilities: A skilled swordsman and guymelef pilot, Dilandu has been trained in both hand-to-hand combat and battling in a guymelef (which is a sort of mecha powered by two crystals called energists). He is an expert in the use of his 'melef's various weapons, all of which are formed of Crima, a highly flammable liquid metal which can be molded into many different forms: blades, shields, projectiles, and clinging tentacles are just a few. The Crima material can also be used as fuel for the guymelef's flamethrower, or can be launched as fireballs. Unfortunately, the usefulness of his Alseides-model 'melef will be a moot point when Dilandu arrives in Manhattan without it.
Because he was raised a soldier, Dilandu has some basic first-aid knowledge, knows how to repair machinery to a degree, and has been trained to survive in difficult conditions and prioritize accordingly. He has a high pain threshold, quick reflexes, and a sharp mind.
Dilandu is also literate (unlike many people from Gaea, his homeworld). He has been trained in the art of diplomacy, but rarely uses it.
Weaknesses: As previously noted, Dilandu is emotionally unstable and prone to violent fits of temper. He is antagonistic and disrespectful to most persons of authority. His impatience often leads him to make mistakes. He is violent and easily riled. He suffers from nightmares, flashbacks, and denial, and copes with his insecurity issues by drinking. When challenged verbally, he may react with physical violence, and his generally caustic personality makes it difficult for Dilandu to form friendships or get along with those people he cannot bully.
Dilandu's combat unit, the Dragonslayers, is his only support group. They stabilize him, and he cares deeply for them. Once seperated from them in Manhattan, he will quickly lose what stability he has unless he finds someone to fill the void, someone willing to take direction and not talk back. Dilandu desperately needs to feel that he is in control, of both himself and his situation, and that illusion will be hard to maintain in Manhattan.
Manhattanite or outsider? outsider
History: Dilandu is a product of the Fate Alteration experiments performed by Zaibach's Madoushi (Sorcerors). The exact details of these procedures are unknown - but they succeeded in creating Dilandau from an entirely different person, a five-year-old child named Celena Schezar. Rather than the blonde, blue-eyed girl they had started out with, the Sorcerors' result was a silver-haired, red-eyed boy with a distinct personality and consciousness all his own.
Raised within the technologically-advanced country of Zaibach and without detailed knowledge of his own origins, Dilandu was brought up as a soldier. His aggressive tendencies were cultivated and encouraged, fueled by his own confusion and the resentment of the painful experiments that the Madoushi continued to perform on him. He took easily to any weapon or technological innovation that could cause destruction, and excelled at nearly everything that he took an interest in - mostly violent passtimes.
It wasn't long before Dilandu's drive, charisma, and combat expertise landed him a captain's rank under General Adelphos. As a reward for taking the head of an enemy general at the tender age of fourteen, he was given command of a unit of hand-picked young soldiers, whom he transformed into some of the Empire's most famous and highly-skilled guymelef pilots. They were called the Dragonslayers.
These boys became Dilandu's surrogate family. Though a harsh commander and extremely quick to anger, Dilandau was protective of his subordinates - he was proud of them, too, and his bond with them went far beyond that of comrades in arms. They were his self-contained world.
But beginning with the assault on a small city-state called Fanelia, that world began to crumble. The Dragonslayers were on the frontlines of Zaibach's war for a new world, a new Fate. They were charged with the capture of the legendary Ispano guymelef Escaflowne, and of Van Fanel, its pilot. There was an instant enmity between Dilandu and Van, which escalated into unbridled hatred when a chance encounter between the two left Dilandu with a disfiguring scar down his right cheek.
Disobeying his commander's orders, Dilandu led his Dragonslayers in an attack against the Escaflowne, its pilot, and his allies. Something went terribly wrong, however - Escaflowne's pilot, seeming to possess some inhuman power, began to mow down the Dragonslayers before Dilandu's very eyes. Too frightened even to move, Dilandu could only watch as Escaflowne's great sword sent his soldiers' guymelefs crashing to the ground, where they were quickly reduced to burning piles of scrap as their fuel and Crima mixed. As even his most seasoned warriors began to fall, Dilandu blacked out.
